Well, with magazines, as opposed to bookstores that are brick & mortar, by definition they can reach a wider audience. I think Paste has some other problems - for example, we subscribed, and then I'm basically 100% sure that we never received a notice to reup. I resubscribed, because Thomas enjoyed the magazine, but I've literally been a subscriber to Rolling Stone for *12 years.* And that's because they are constantly on me to resub, and they make it attractive and easy. I like Paste. I like that they are local and I want them to succeed. But I have to hope this restructure includes "actually bother people to resub."

The people at Wordsmith's were very nice people and I'm sad how it had to end for them, but they made some bad business decisions that sped up their death. The selection they carried wasn't obscure enough for an indy bookstore, and not mainstream enough to compete with Borders, etc. They spent a lot of money on big events that ended up burning them.

I don't know enough about how Paste or the sci-fi bookstore run/ran their respective businesses to say for sure, but I'm not sure the situations are quite an apple-to-apples comparisons.

Great post and really good point about reusing buildings that weren't intended for anything but a specific use. On the other hand, at the time they were built factories and warehouses were designed for a specific use. I think what makes them more appropriate for adaptive reuse is their proximity to other things in the city, rather than being out by themselves.

Rusty - you said:

I’m not sure it’s so much that it’s inherently more difficult to reuse space in the suburbs because of its design so much as it is there is more space and people are more willing to accept longer travel distances. So developers don’t have to bother reusing something when they can just build on an empty lot that will require less effort and creativity.

I agree, that's what happened in the past - gas was cheap, loans were easy to get, and no one thought property anywhere could be a bad investment.

I think most of those calculations have changed now, though. People are having a harder time getting loans - and developers are not having an easy time getting financing, either. Also, while gas is currently cheap, there is a whole generation now who knows what it is like to deal with $4+ gas or even situations where they cannot find gas at all! Living in an area where you have to drive miles to get anywhere makes much less sense now.

The author does mention the big box reuse movement - but she also states that it is hard to see the same thing happening in a cheaply-built house.
